Can CivicRM handle tracking multiple payments for a single event
July 30, 2013, 02:52:51 pm
This questions may have been answered somewhere but I could not find it. This post brought CiviCRM to my attention as I had never heard of it:

wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Partial+Payments+for+Event+Registrations+and+Memberships

It appears in 2010 it was in development but not sure the extent of the development and I couldn't find the details in the demo or test drive. I'm hoping to have people register for an event, pay some amount toward the total and then make more payments toward the event later. These amounts are not at set intervals nor are they predetermined amounts. They might even be made in cash or check in person and not online. When payments are made, the total owed decreases. From the system there would need to be a way to simply alert the event registrant of their balance and provide them ways to pay. In the end, all payment data would need to be easily exported into an accounting system for tax purposes.

Example:
Tim registers for $1000 trip and his mom makes a $200 deposit right then
Grandma sends $250 to support him as a check
Tims friend Bob gives Tim $10 from his lunch money to support Tim
Tim pays $90 in cash from mowing lawns
Tim's uncle makes a $300 donation online
------
Deadline time roles around and an admin hits a button to email all registrants...
Tim's balance is $150. He gets an email with a link. His dad pays the balance with a card right then.
Tim goes on the trip and his life is changed  :D
-----
All data is connected to Quickbooks and year end tax data is sent out

Maybe that's possible? Maybe not? If you know of another system that might work please also share that. I am open to suggestions. Thanks

This is currently not part of the code base. Partial payments did not get the funding needed :(

if your org can contribute resources or $$$ to incorporate this feature into future versions of CiviCRM that would be great

Thanks for the reply. That's what I feared. I can't really find a solution to my problem yet but will keep looking. I don't have the funding for this small an issue to pour into the software. Thanks again

Unfortunately, I think Lobo's right.  I was just today dealing with this issue with Blackbaud Sphere, a very similar product to CiviCRM which costs the organization I'm working with $5,500/year, which is actually a low price for Sphere.  They seem to be in the same place that CiviCRM is on this issue; I think you'll find that your solution is either going to be more expensive than you'd like, or will involve a hack to your data.

Jon:

now all we need to do is to convince orgs that used to pay for convio / kintera etc to direct part of that money into making the civicrm ecosystem sustainable and help add more advanced features like this :)

I'm working on it!  My ask for this particular organization is to direct some small but meaningful sum (I'll ask $50/month in the hopes of getting $25/month) toward ongoing work.  You'll know if I succeeded in a couple of months :)

Did anything further result from this?

andyg8,

Partial payments are part of the upcoming CiviCRM 4.5 release, which is currently at beta5.  You can test the new functionality at demo.civicrm.org and selecting "CiviCRM 4.5 sandbox".  See the announcement re: partial payments here:
