Limit the number of active memberships?

We would like to limit the number of active memberships for one contact. Is this possible and in that case, how?

There's no mechanism currently to do this. Depending on where you want to enforce the limit, we can potentially advise you on code modifications to accomplish this.

I am thinking along the lines when a user is signing up. On submit of the contribution page.
