Hi,

If I were to add a column to a table in the database and then upgrade CiviCRM later on, what would happen to the added column?

Might be lost. It's not possible to know what tables will be dropped in future versions.

Why would you want to add a column to a table however? That's certainly not recommended.

I added a column to the mailing_component table to track the contact id of the user who created the component. Using this, we can use relationships and groups to allow users to only see and use designated mailing components.
