webhost SMTP limits
August 08, 2013, 08:21:26 am
Our host limits outbound SMTP to 300/day on our shared server. They have opened port 20095 for us. And want to know if our SMTP traffic is going to violate that limit. We plan to send 1500 emails 3 times a month, but assume the actual traffic is from the CiviSMTP server. Can you provide a definitive answer so we can put these worries to rest? TIA

You should confirm with your host whether the 300/day limit includes sending through port 20095. They probably only apply limit if you send through their standard SMTP as opposed to port 20095 but you should confirm.

Kind regards,

Thanks Leyla,

I have updated our support ticket with our host, asking for confirmation. I hope we don't have to transfer to another host!

I'm now curious about how the civiSMTP service works. I thought civiMail sent civiSMTP one copy of the newletter (XML, CSS, content, attachment(s), etc.) with a list of headers (or something), and then the server did all the mailing, and sent back bounces, etc. via SOAP. Now I wonder if two servers aren't being used for one mailing? And if that is a fair assessment, what is the advantage of resending via civiSMTP?

Don't misunderstand my tone as confrontational, I just wish to have a better understanding than I had from the diagram.

For outgoing emails, using an external SMTP server such as CiviSMTP means that your site connects to the external SMTP server and sends the full content of the email for each and every recipient. So if you send an email to 400 recipients, your server is sending out the full content of the email 400 times.

Thanks Hershel,

Can you provide the advantage of that? It does not solve the issue with most shared account SMTP limits and transfer rates.

...also, integrating with civiMail as opposed to using and maintaining the web app mailing list is advantageous, but is that it?

With some hosts it will not solve the problem, but most hosts that limit outgoing email only limit use of their own SMTP servers. Using an external SMTP server will have no limit, on those hosts.

I don't understand what you are asking here.

ok, just got a clue, I hope! SMTP is from civiMail to civiSMTP. We are not using the host mail servers. Basically, just bit & bytes on a non-standard port. Now we can make our case to our host. Thanks, Hershel. BTW, CiviHosting is our alternative.  ;)
