UPDATE:

Two things were wrong:

The mailing had to be set to Public,
and I needed to implement this:

i.e. definiing a CiviCRM landing page for all frontend actions:

define( 'CIVICRM_UF_WP_BASEPAGE', 'about');

Worked like a charm!

When I send a test mailing, the generated unsubscribe link using the {action_unsubscribeURL} token is: http://sitename.org/?page=CiviCRM&q=civicrm/mailing/unsubscribe&reset=1&jid=1&qid=1&h=dccdc7fa8d140a0f but it results in a page that shows only "Index of /" 

Any clues as to what I might be doing wrong?
