Is it possible to include, as a registration step, payment through an external system? Since there doesn't seem to be an integration with our service (PayFlow Pro or Volusion), what would be ideal would be a step in the registration process that would either a) after registration have a "next step - pay" type link/button or b) include as a step in the registration a link to pay and then ask the user to come back and enter in the payment confirmation number.

Any ideas of whether this is possible?

There is currently no mechanism to do something like this. The closest would be to enable the "Pay Later" option (which will create a "Pending" registration and a "Pending" payment/contribution record). You would include text in the configurable instructions for pay-later, telling folks to go to your payment site and make a payment.

Subsequently you'd need to reconcile these payments to the pending payments/registrations. There is a "batch" function to "Update Pending Contributions" from CiviContribute >> Find Contributions - which you could use to quickly record the received payments.

Alternatively, you could look at developing / contributing a PayFlow plugin. The model for coding payment processor plugins is pretty well defined - so contact us here or on IRC if you're interested in that option.
