Mailings go to "Promotions" category on gmail
August 21, 2013, 03:17:09 am
Hi,

By default, civimail behaves like a good mail citizen and flags the mailings as being mass mailing. It was mostly a technical thing with no visible impact (beside a better delivery), but one user mentioned me yesterday that

1) gmail has a new tab system for normal, social and promotions emails
2) some users aren't like me and haven't removed that crappy-made-to-push-more-ads "google feature"
3) civimail is used not only for "real bulkmails" newsletters type email, but also for info to participants for instance (so they can track clicks/opening)

Having newsletters ending up in Promotions sucks, but if people can cope with google "improved" interface that's fair and game. However, having the latest info about the conference stuck in promotion sucks badly, no matter what.

I was wondering if we need to introduce a new way of distinguishing between "real" mass mailing and "not really mass but still using civimail".

I'm not sure about the UI, as sending a newsletter as "normal" mails is as bad as sending a normal email as a mass mailing (the former increases you chance of being seen as a spamer, the later increases you chance of having a normal mailing ignored as a newsletter)

What do you think? What should we do?

X+

PS. Technically, it's about setting or not the "Precedence:bulk" header in the email. I've tested, if you remove it the mail sent doesn't end up under the promotions tab.

Just wondering if you could elaborate on how to remove the Precedence:bulk header? Am running into this issue where all civimails are going into gmail promotions and thus a large majority of readers are no longer seeing them.

Hi,

The option right now is to change the code. Beware that sending bulk email without that increases the risk of getting you into the spam. Promotion is still better than spam in my book ;)

A good practice I've seen is to send an email explaining how to avoid the promotion trap: tell your supporter they just have to move your mail out of the promotion to the inbox once, and you'll be better
