CiviMail and unsubscribing from Smart Groups
April 05, 2008, 09:44:06 pm
In response to a bug report from one of our users I am testing unsubscribing a contact from a smart group using the action tag URL. All visibile indicators show that the contact was unsubscribed. When I view the contact record groups tag, the smart group is in the list of "Past Groups" as removed by email. When I look at the members of the smart group, the contact is not in the list.

Unfortunately, the contact continues to get email sent to the smart group.

Could you run this test on a smaller controlled smart group and see if you can reproduce this issue?

Is the mailing sent to only one group (i.e. the smart group above) or is it to multiple groups? A mailing is sent to ALL members who are subscribed to ANY of the groups.

The group consists of only about 5 contacts. The test database has only about 70 contacts.

The mailing was sent only to the smart group.

we'll test this out on 2.0 and see if we can reproduce it and if so, we'll file an issue and fix.

One thing I also noticed was that if you view the smart group in Manage Groups, you only see the 4 remaining contacts but if you click on the Edit Smart Group Search Criteria, all five contacts are displayed. This leads me to believe that the system must keep track of the fact that the contact unsubscribed but ignores it when a new mailing is sent.

I am not sure of when we will be upgrading. If you fix it will it be possible to retrofit it to 1.9?

lets reproduce this issue first and then figure out the changes needed to fix this for 2.0/2.1

Once we have done that, we can give u'll the exact diff set and then you can backport it to 1.9 for your needs

I've reproduced it on 2.0 and created an issue http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-2951.

I see there has been a fix for 2.0. I have never backported anything before so would like to know how to do that.

If you want to patch the DA servers, might be best to get a developer / Rob T to do so. Would also be good to keep your changes under some sort of version control

The patch should easily apply to the 1.9 version also. The diffs and patch can be obtained from our fisheye view of svn here: http://biryani.osuosl.org:8181/changelog/CiviCRM?cs=13885
