MySQL ODBC connection from Excel
August 28, 2013, 11:28:31 am
My expertise is in business intelligence (BI) software, not in connecting to a database. I have been trying to get access to a civiCRM database (current release) with the MySQL ODBC connector from Excel (2010) without success. I can get at the data through the report modules, but cannot find the tables and fields directly.

The reason for my trying is that Microsoft has released Power Pivot as a free add-in for Excel (2010 and 2013) and it is very powerful. It can put interactive reports in the hands of users with little effort, and the cost is excellent.

While it is possible to download the data and rebuild the relationships, going directly into the database, which PowerPivot can do, would be the best method.

Can anyone help me make this connection work?

seems like power pivot is quite cool and useful to excel users.

seems like this is more an ODBC issue and i suspect u might get better answers / replies on a google search or on a specific mysql/odbc forum (most folks out here dont use windows)

Haven't looked at odbc to mysql in years but I vaguely remember having to set one of the advanced settings (maybe character set)? But yes this is probably an odbc/mysql specific question.

Fortunately most of the data I deal with is small enough that the regular pivot table on a csv export works fine, combined with a macro to make it easier for users to create the pivot.

If you do find the answer by asking on a different (MySQL) forum, I would appreciate it if you posted back here with a link to the answer.
