Brainstorm: Proliferation of Price Sets, And What it Looks like in CiviDiscount
August 29, 2013, 12:20:29 am
This isn't a complaint but an invitation to brainstorm.  How can we do this better?

After 18 months on 3.4, a recent upgrade to 4.2 reveals a mass conversion/creation of no less than 172 price sets in this instance.   This site gets what I would describe as "moderate" use: 5 contribution pages and a few dozen events over the last 18 months.  They're fond of early bird discounts.

This seems neither here nor there, except when applying a discount to an event using the CiviDiscount module.  In 4.2 I need to apply the discount to both the event AND price set(s) in use.   It's annoying and difficult.   I think we can do this better.

Ideas:

1) increase the size of the multi-selects, as you see here in this screenshot

2) do not show price sets used only with: past events, inactive events, or inactive contribution pages

3) other ideas?

Thanks yo.

Regarding the multi-select UI... if we assume that the list of possible options will remain long, then this alternative widget may be more useable:

(Coleman pointed that widget out to me a few weeks ago.)

Thanks Tim, that's a good band aid.  But all price sets, even price sets that are disabled, show up in that list.   I'll file an issue.

Note that in recent versions of CiviDiscount (dont think we've done a release recently) all quick config price sets have been suppressed. So all you need to do is choose the event.

makes things a wee bit / lot better for orgs with lots of simple events or contrib pages
