How to change the workflow messages? - German localization
September 06, 2013, 01:55:10 am
Hello everyone,
I am using the German localization of CiviCRM and have the recurrent problem that I don't understand how I can influence certain messages that occur during a workflow. Just to give you an example:

I have tried to set up the registration form for a mailing list (using "Profiles" in CiviCRM). When I tried to subscribe to this mailing list for test purposes, I do get an opt-in message (via email) completely in English. When confirming the subscription, I am redirected to my profile page, where I get the information "Thank you. Ihre Informationen wurden gespeichert.". However, I don't know where this "Thank you" is coming from. I made similar experiences for unsubscribing a mailing list, so I hope / think that it is the same underlying problem.

Hope to hear from you,
Christian

Hi,

* Are you using "de" or "de_CH"?
* Could you post screenshots?

In the code, I see in: CRM/Profile/Form/Edit.php :

Code: [Select]
CRM_Core_Session::setStatus(ts('Your information has been saved.'), ts('Thank you.'), 'success');
The strings also seem to be translated correctly in the "de" translation, however, the translation is missing from de_CH.

Dear Mathieu,
thanks for your response, I am using the "de" version. However, the current version has been installed a couple of months ago, so it is possible that the existing files are simply deprecated.

1) Since I am relatively new to CiviCRM, can you give me a hint where (and how) I could perform such an update?

2) Additionally, I haven't really figured out how I can generally change workflow messages, either because they are insufficiently translated (for our particular purpose) or not translated at all. I found that there are certain messages that can be directly set in CiviCRM, such as the automated email-responses.
In this regard, it would be great to know which places there are in CiviCRM for changing messages in general, so that I could sequentially work through them. Is it possible to get an overview about them?

3) As far as I understand, a lot of the translation takes place in the Transifex-files. Is it possible to customize (or add) translation strings in these files for the particular purposes we have, i.e. to not use the translations from the community? If so, how would this work?

4) Where can I find more information about the meaning of the individual files (or folders?) on https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/civicrm/language/de/ , such as hrdcase, countries, grant, ...?

5) When signing a petition, the signee has to confirm his signature in an email. Thereby, the following message is shown to the signee (in WordPress):

Quote
STEP 2: Please Check Your Email

To complete and confirm your signature, please follow the activation instructions sent to the email address you provided.

Important: Before we can add your signature, you must validate your email address by clicking on the activation link in the confirmation e-mail. Sometimes our confirmation emails get flagged as spam and are moved to your bulk folder.

I found the individual in the CiviCRM "campaign" resource (via the Transifex-website) and each of them is currently not translated. So, if I wanted to translate them: How would this work?

Huh, a lot of questions. :-)

Best wishes
Christian

Officially, you can download the "civicrm-l10n.tar.gz" from the project page on SourceForge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/civicrm/files/civicrm-stable/4.3.5/

The civicrm-l10n.tar.gz does not need to be the same version as the version of CiviCRM that you are using (although, of course, you are always encouraged to upgrade to the latest version). You can unpack this archive in your existing installation. It will unpack files in your "civicrm/l10n" and "civicrm/sql" directory (the "sql" files are only used during the initial installation, however).

Alternatively, you can download just the file to replace your existing civicrm/l10n/de_DE/civicrm.mo
https://github.com/civicrm/l10n/blob/master/po/de/civicrm.mo

Click on the "Raw" button to download the file. It is updated weekly, so if you fix the translation on Transifex (https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/civicrm/), after a few days, you can download the file itself, without needing to manipulate the .po files.

There are different type of strings:

* admin configurations, ex: "option lists" such as "individual prefixes", "phone types", ..
* per-entity settings, ex: event title, thank you message, profile messages, etc.
* workflow messages, Admin -> CiviMail -> Workflow -> System messages (ex: contribution receipts)
* strings in Smarty templates, that can be customized or overrided ("word replacement")
* strings in PHP code, which can be overrided

Unfortunately, it's hard to find where a string comes from. If you have difficulty finding a specific string, you can ask on this forum.

You should also join us at CiviCon London, where we'll have a workshop on translation/localisation :)

If it is to replace existing strings, you can use "Word replacements" in Admin -> Customize data and screens" -> "Word replacements".

In some cases, although it should be avoided, I customize the Smarty templates or use hooks, such as hook_civicrm_buildForm(). However, those types of customizations require more maintenance, so should be avoided.

4) Where can I find more information about the meaning of the individual files (or folders?) on https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/civicrm/language/de/ , such as hrdcase, countries, grant, ...?

Most of the file names are based on the components (Event, Mail, Contribution, Grant, ..). Others such as hrdcase can be ignored.

* countries: the list of countries displayed in, for example, addresses.
* provinces: state/provinces for addresses.
* common-base : strings found in multiple components.

We should document that somewhere :)

* Create an account on Transifex.com
* Join the German team
* Translate online and save
* after a few days, we automatically synchronise Transifex to https://github.com/civicrm/l10n/blob/master/po/de/civicrm.mo (I hope to change this soon, and make it available daily)
* install the new civicrm.mo file locally

Sorry for not going in great details, but if something needs clarification let me know.

We also have some documentation in the wiki, but it needs polishing, updating. Your input would be greatly appreciated:

Dear Mathieu,
wow, thanks a lot! I will work through your remarks and will hopefully be able to resolve the other issues I have.

Nevertheless, in one case, I already encountered some problems, so it would be great to hear your (professional) opinion on how to fixed them as 'correct' as possible.

When a user wants to opt out from a mailing list, he is confronted with the following interface:

Quote
Abbestellen (opt out)

Wollen Sie XY (xy@xy.de) aus der Verteilerliste austragen?

Button 1: Austragen (   Button 2: Abbrechen

Now, I want to do the following things:

(a) Change "Abbestellen (opt out)" into a specific message for our organisation
(b) Correct the first button, i.e. "Austragen (" to "Austragen"

First of all, when I checked the browser source code, I found this:

Code: [Select]
<input type="submit" name="_qf_optout_next" value="Austragen (" opt out")" class="form-submit">
So, basically one problem is the translation of the English button label "Optout", as the double quotes around "opt out" are causing problems in the source code and the button 'value' becomes "Austragen (".

1) What is the preferred way to resolve such an issue in Transifex?

When afterwards using word replacement, it turned out that in the English version both the heading and the button label are named "Optout": when replacing "Optout" (exact match) both the heading and the button label were replaced by the same string. In Transifex I found the translation for the button (templates/CRM/Mailing/Page/Optout.tpl), however, I could not find the translation for the heading / I do not understand where the heading is defined .

2) What would you recommend me to do?

3) And a last (more general) question: When displaying a CiviCRM generated form in WordPress and the CSS gets mixed up (oversized footer/navbar/form elements), what is the recommended solution in such a case?

Thank you so much for your help!

Best regards
Christian
