504 Gateway Time-out
September 08, 2013, 09:47:48 pm
Greetings,

I've been running wordpress and civicrm beta 1, and imported all of my records into a new site.  After I resolved a memory error where civicrm/wordpress (when going into an import) expands to about 500-600 MB, I started getting a 504 Gateway timeout, both for these imports (when larger than about ~150) and running a 'dedupe' scheduled job (I wanted to use aggressive mode).  This timeout occurs at (with load times) 120s.

Despite the timeout, the php script still completes its execution and all of the imports succeed.  However on larger imports (~700-800+), the 'checking' script for the preview does not manage to complete in time, so I'm unable to initiate the import script.

I initially contacted my hosting provider to see if there was an apache or php setting that could be causing the timeout, though they were unable to see any issue with my server, and nothing timed out (nor does anything appear to be failing on the access.log).  Is it possible theres a setting incorrect in the new version which would cause this condition?

There can't be any code that would cause a 504 timeout. Generally it's a server side issue http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/504error.htm or a networking issue. In particular, if small imports work, then the CiviCRM code works fine. Larger imports put more stress on the network and the server, however, so that can cause issues to arise there.
