Looking for instructions on how to set up a petition form
September 09, 2013, 02:34:46 pm
Hi,

I am completely new to Civi and I just installed on WordPress for the first time. The process went very smoothly. The next thing I need to do is create an online petition and I'm looking for instructions on how to do that. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Thank you!

I'm following the instructions and I've gotten stuck. Hoping someone can help.

It says "Create a custom profile with custom fields to capture responses to the petition questions.  When creating the custom field set, from the Used For dropdown menu select Activities, and for the activity type select Petition."

I created the profile but the activity type "Petition" is not showing up on the drop-down.

Under Administer > Customize Data and Screens > Activity Types, the closest thing I see on the list is "Petition Signature". It is enabled and reserved. I'm not sure what to do next...should I create the activity type "Petition" or...?

Petition has been renamed to petition signature a while back. Seems the documentation isn't up to date.

We need to update the book. Hopefully we can tackle it on the next sprint.

Hi and thanks for the responses xavier & Donald Lobo.

Donald - I gave it a try on the demo server and everything I see there is exactly the same as on my installation.

xavier - good to know, but I'm still stuck because "petition signature" doesn't show up in the drop down where I (think) I need it too, under administer > customize data and screens > profiles > custom profile I created. There I select activity as the field name, and then directly to the right of that I think I should be able to choose petition signature from the drop down, but it's not there. I do see it under under administer > customize data and screens > activity types though.

I am really hoping to figure this out today so I can get this petition finished and report back to the group that is waiting for it, any further tips will be greatly appreciated.  :)

In the custom data screen, you can extend the data stored for activities and petitions

In profile, you just select the custom data that has already been created

I don't understand. Are you saying I should add a new activity type under administer > customize data and screens > activity types? And then I can select it in the profile?

no, you keep the same activity type, but you add new custom fields to it (to store the questions).

Once done, you can take these extra fields and put them in a profile that you use for your petition

I've got it working now but I think it would be a good idea to update the instructions to make them more clear. I can type up suggested changes to the wording if there is interest.

Thanks again for the responses.

thanx

Sure. I am using Civi 4.3.6 and WordPress 3.6.1, the latest stable releases as of today. Here is how I would change the wording to make it a little easier for new users like myself to understand.

Create two Custom Profiles

In order to create a new petition, you must create two custom profiles: one to capture the contact information of the signer, and the other to capture the responses to the petition questions. The responses to the petition questions are recorded in the activity record of type Petition Signature for each individual who signs the petition.

1. Go to Administer  >  Customize Data and Screens > Profiles and add a profile with fields for the contact information you want to collect, such as First Name, Last Name, and Email. You may want to make some of these fields required so you capture enough information to communicate with signers at a later date. Note: you must collect at minimum an email address in the contact profile, because the Petition feature will send an email to the signer of the petition to prompt them to verify their email address. Only those verified email addresses can be counted.

2. Go to Administer > Customize Data and Screens > Custom Fields and add a set of custom fields to capture responses to the petition questions. From the Used For dropdown menu select Activities. For the Activity Type select Petition Signature.

3. Under Administer > Customize Data and Screens > Profiles add a profile for the petition responses. Select Activity from the Field Name drop down menu, then select from the custom fields you created.
