Just came across this nice profiler (http://www.php.net/manual/en/intro.xhprof.php) since a collaborator had turned on a Drupal module (https://drupal.org/project/xhprof) that makes it available in Drupal. Might be a convenient tool to use to look for performance and scalability improvements.
