Hello,

Newbie here. I've been working toward an understanding of how to create a multilingual Civi system. I have a couple of questions. I appreciate any help offered.

I have a CiviCRM/Drupal installation. I am running an English/Spanish site - my site uses the path to distinguish whether to show English ('en') or Spanish ('es') content. I have downloaded the latest civicrm.mo from GitHub.

1. The Civi admin/user backend is being localized properly, but my form field labels for profiles that I create are not being localized. For instance, I have a newsletter signup profile that I have created that includes a country field from the contacts database(s) - when the path is .../es/civicrm/..., the countries listed in the dropdown are correctly shown in Spanish but the field label for Country (Primary) is in English when it should be displayed in Spanish.

2. I can't seem to figure out how to translate the content on the profile that I have created (the actual verbiage - "Signup for our newsletter and updates..."). Do I have to maintain an English profile and a Spanish profile for the same signup sheet?

Hi Lottie,

1. You need to translate each profile field manually in the UI as the civicrm.mo is only used to initialize the value if you are doing a localized installation. Otherwise you can import the values in the database using civicrm api but i don't recommand this if you just have to do it one time and you are not familiar with the api.

2. When you first create a profile or a profile field, you can't translate it. You need to edit them after the creation to see the translation icon (as shown in the screenshot - http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/secure/attachment/19544/2013-06-12_09-37_Friends-AMIS.jpg). When using the icon, you should have a popup with all the language set up for your CiviCRM.

This is a big help - thanks for pointing me in the right direction! I was able to edit the field labels and even the name of the profile. Thank you.

The only thing I am still unable to edit is the pre-form and post-form content on any existing profiles - no handy dandy translation icon available next to these items.

As well as my own installation, I also viewed the settings screens for the existing profiles on the CiviCRM 4.3 Demo Site with the same result (hopefully, this can be accessed at the demo site - .../civicrm/admin/uf/group/update?action=update&id=2&context=group).

Any suggestions?

I hope that this will be helpful to someone else. Thanks again Samuel for helping me get on the right road.

I now know how to translate profiles and I will write the steps here (this does not include instructions on how to setup i18n and l10n, which are required in order to translate a profile).

Note that for my site, the language changes according to the URL. Thus, *.org/en=English and *.org/es=Spanish.

Translating Profile Name
1. Create the profile in your default language and save it.
2. View the Profiles List and click Settings.
3. Click the translation icon next to Profile Name (see the attachment).
4. Enter the translation for your profile name in the translation popup and Save.

Once you translate the profile name, the translated profile will be visible in the Profile Lists of that language. For me, if I am viewing the list of English profiles, I simply change the /en/ to /es/ in the URL and I am presented with the list of Spanish profiles. You can translate the field properties from either the default language profile or the translated language profile.

Translating Field Properties
1. View the Profiles List and click Fields to edit the fields of an existing profile. You will be presented with the list of profile fields for your profile.
2. For each field that you want to translate, click Edit.
3. By clicking on the translation icon, you can enter translations for the field label, field pre-help and field post-help.
4. Enter your translations in the popup box and Save.

Content is translated by accessing the translated profile. For me this means, changing my the /en/ in my URL to /es/ and then selecting Settings for the profile I want to edit. Initially, I am presented with the content I entered in English.
