Installation Issue
September 17, 2013, 12:00:22 am
Hi,

I'm having a very tough time getting CiviCRM to run. I am setting up a local test site using MAMP(i'm on a mac) to see if civiCRM will be what i need for a job.

I have tried installing ver. 4.3.5 on Drupal 6 and 7, using their respective civiCRM installs, and both did not work. The admin top menu bar was completely static and did not link to anything. I also tried ver 4.3.4 on drupal 7, as well as 4.3.5 on Joomla 2.5 and all have had the same issue. I have changed the cache extension in MAMP from Xcache as i read that it can cause issues with civiCRM but that did not help.

I also tried using the starter kit to only have that broken as well and not functional. These have all been completely fresh installs with not carry over or upgrades.

If anyone has any idea as to why this is happening. Please let me know as this is very frustrating.

Regards,
Will

If the admin bar doesn't open up to show dropdown menus, then that's a JS issue, not a server side problem. Hard to say what the problem is. Can you try using Firebug for Firefox and look for any errors or missing files in the Net tab?

Yeah, i had thought that it might be a JS issue. I had a look at the net tab and there are ALOT of JS related files it can't find/load. Any idea why this would be?

We would need more details to know. What are the directories used for the install? What URLs are you using? Did you use the installer for CiviCRM and it worked OK? What is the URL of some missing JS files?

With MAMP, make sure it is using a suitable version of PHP, and that there is plenty of memory available for PHP to run in. Also check the file permissions of the files that are being reported as not found.

In terms of testing out CiviCRM, the demo site can be really useful - at demo.civicrm.org. Might save you the bother of struggling with a local install.

I managed to get it up and running somehow. I'm not sure what it was that fixed it. But thanks for everyones help.

Also the reason i'm running it in a local environment is because we are looking at using CiviCRM for a client and we need to test and modify/customise certain parts of it for them to make sure it will provide everything they need.
