Considerations for CiviCRM hosting
September 25, 2013, 02:39:50 am
Good Day
I am implementing CiviCRM for a humanitarian organization in Amman, Jordan.

For prototyping, discovery, and training have created a local install of CiviCRM 4.3 with Drupal 7 and MySQL 5 on a Windows platform with IIS 7.5 and it works well.

For our production environment, we need a hosted solution.  We have some capacity for database administration, application development and site management so I want to find a hosting provider that offers the OS platform and Drupal, leaving as much else as possible to us.

I am interested to learn from anyone who gone through these issues.

I look forward to sharing with the community in this new endeavor.

Sincerely,
Keith Green

Hi Keith
We offer a fully or partially managed hosted solution with automated software updates, daily backups and support ticketing for Drupal and CiviCRM issues. We run a variety options: managed shared hosting, cpanel access and VMs depending on your requirements.
You'll find lots of other providers as well on http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Hosting+provider+information but beware - this is not an approved list so some of them are just bulk hosting providers where you might just about be able to get Civi running, while others are experts and run systems optimised for Drupal/Civi. Some offer more service while others are more suited to DIY. Personally I'd be very suspicious of anything at $4 a month ;)
I believe there's a plan to review these entries and rate them at some point. Until then, any feedback is welcome.

My org went with a VM on Rimuhosting after some bad experiences with some big-name shared hosts I won't mention. The experience has been very positive - they are very responsive to support requests but leave full control of the box to us. Prices are reasonable and performance has been good.
Try asking your question on the new CiviCRM help site.

You must go with a specialized provider of drupal/civicrm or a VPS/Dedicated.  Don't even consider shared hosting for production.  I've tried several vendors - if you go with a VPS make sure you benchmark them as civicrm can take up a lot of resources.  look for multiple, fast CPU cores and SSD.  Contact me if you want some more info on my experiences.
