How to migrate joomla 1.5+CiviCRM 3.4.8 to Joomla 2.5 + CiviCRM 4.3.5
September 26, 2013, 04:41:21 am
We have a website currently on Joomla 1.5.8 with CiviCRM 3.4.8.
We are upgrading the Joomla version to 2.5.x series.

As CiviCRM 3.4.8 is not compatible with the new version of Joomla 2.5.x  and to Use new features in CiviCRM we'll need to install the latest CiviCRM 4.3.5 available.

Now, I couldn't find any relevant info on how to migrate data from CiviCRM 3.x to CiviCRM 4.3.x. Installed in Joomla.

Please show the path to achieve this.

Thanks,
Manthan

Hi,
I'm not sure if you have tried your upgrade yet. I'm just going to chime in because no one else has. I use Drupal so I don't have any recent hands on experience with the Joomla version.

First of all:
* Back up your Joomla 1.5 db and files
* Back up your CiviCRM 3.x db and files
* Make sure the backups are actually complete and work as restore files

Then:
It looks like theoretically you could try to upgrade your site to Joomla 2.x and then immediately run the upgrade of CiviCRM to the 4.2/4.3 version.

It may be necessary to deactivate the CiviCRM Joomla extension, run the Joomla upgrade, put the new Civi code in place, re-activate the extension, then run the CiviCRM database upgrade. We don't have to do this Drupal/CiviCRM upgrades because we have CiviCRM versions 4.0 and 4.1 that are compatible with both D6 and D7 as discussed here: http://civicrm.org/blogs/spidersilk/best-practices-upgrading-drupal-6-7-and-civicrm-3-4-same-time. I took a look at the compatibily notes on all the CiviCRM versions and I don't see that for Joomla. Therefore as I said you may have to deactivate the extension before the upgrade or it will deactivate it automatically.  Of course I'm just guessing and a Joomla user could jump in here.

In any case with such a huge jump in versions you need to be extra prepared for failure. If the CiviCRM upgrade fails you would need to:
A) Roll back to Joomla 1.5 and and CiviCRM 3.4 by restoring your backups and go through at least one intermediate stage.
B) Sometimes this works: Run the upgrade on a powerful local machine instead of in the hosting environment to rule out resource issues

Suppose you go with A to avoid having to move the site offline. For example if the full upgrade fails you can try going through Joomla 1.6, CiviCRM 4.1.
So upgrade Joomla to 1.7 and then go to CiviCRM 4.1. If this succeeds then:
* Back up your Joomla 1.7 db and files
* Back up your CiviCRM 4.1 db and files
* Make sure the backups are actually complete and work as restore files
Continue with the next compatible upgrade version pair.

(Edited: Clarifying what I meant about the D6 and D7 example)

I did a recent project to bring Civi and Joomla current.

We used Jupgrade -  http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/migration-a-conversion/joomla-migration/11658  to get Joomla upgraded.  Make sure to continue work in the Jupgrade folder till you go live.

When you upgrade you will see that Civi has been turned off. Run the upgrade for Civi and it will re-install it.  I found I needed to run the updates incrementally to get the best results.

Also watch the instructions for changes that need to be made to the civicrm.settings.php file.
