Need a simple donor prospect search
October 04, 2013, 10:28:56 am
Can anyone tell me how to do a simple prospect search of people in our database that includes contact information, meaning all of the people who have not given a gift. At this point I had to create a group of all our donors, then use the constituent report (summary) and set a filter (not to include the donor group). However that list includes all households, organizations and individuals. Is there a way to eliminate this duplication?

Or is there just a much simpler way to do a prospect search of everyone who has not given that includes pertinent information?

It seems like all the searches only return results on people who have given a gift, unless I go through the above steps to group the "donors" and then exclude them.

Any help? Does anyone else have this issue? Is it clear what I am asking?

seems like there is no report for this as yet.

If you know php/mysql and/or have access to a developer/integrator, you could write this report as an extension. Please do share the report if you do this.

i suspect this will be useful to quite a few other folks. A bit surprised it has not come up as yet

thanx

You're on the right track.  The reason no one has made a "simple report" to do what you describe is because that once you create three smart groups it's easy to use the existing reports to do exactly what you want.

1. smart group = all contacts who've made a donation
2. smart group = all households
3. smart group = all organizations

Use a report, exclude all three of the above groups.  Hint: hold down the CTRL key or Apple key to select or unselect more than one group.   Run the report.  You've now got a list of all the individuals who have never donated.

These smart groups are useful for not just reports, but also for searches and mailings and other things.  I recommend everyone create smart groups like the ones above.

Thank you for that answer. I did try that, but the problem is not everyone in our system is entered as both an individual and household, or both an individual and a business. So I cannot just eliminate these groups without eliminating people from the list all together. Dies that make sense? Any thoughts on how to work around that? Do we have to enter every person as an individual no matter what for CIVI tools to work for us?

I do think that for "simple" things like this, having a "simple donor prospect" search or report is a good thing for civi to have (either in core or as an extension)

shauna: if u can get your integrator and/or sponsor a developer to do it that would be beneficial to you and the ecosystem

I received your private message.  I can tell by the way you are asking your questions and using the word 'duplication' that you are not very familiar with CiviCRM.  That's not a criticism.  However, duplication usually means two contacts of the same type that are the same (same individual, same organization, etc) not an individual and a household that happen to share the same name.

This is a sign of a data management issue that goes beyond searching and using groups.

Beyond that, sorry, I don't understand your question.  I do know that in theory you should not create lots individual contacts that have no data in order to make a search work how you hope it would.  Remember you can run the report 3 times, once for each contact type: individual, household, organization... excluding the other two contact types.

I think that if you have a consultant or integrator who is familiar with CiviCRM you should ask this person for help.  If you do not have a consultant, you should hire one.
