MailChimp (http://mailchimp.com/resources/research/email-on-mobile-devices/html/) provides a bunch of very useful suggestions for rendering emails and email newsletters nicely on mobile devices.
Eg use media rendering, change from fixed pixel width for desktops to full width, use single column on mobile, and use a font of 17 - 22pt. Even more detailed tips
'include “-webkit-text-size-adjust:100%;” in your CSS to prevent Android settings from overriding your text sizes. You can use "-ms-text-size-adjust:100%;" for the same effect in Windows Mobile'.
'Gmail strips out the HTML head element, and with it, any CSS it contains. So if you’re coding your own HTML emails, be sure to inline your CSS. '

We should provide a good version of this in our default newsletter, which is supposed to show people how to set up a bulk mailing according to best practices.

In our book documentation, we should likely include information from http://mailchimp.com/resources/research/effects-of-list-segmentation-on-email-marketing-stats/. Note the semi-shocker: segmenting by
actions previously taken led to worse metrics for list! Turns out that this is mainly used in campaigns to get people who haven't yet opened to open / complete action.
