Suggestion regarding how CiviCRM handles HTTPS/SSL --

Once someone navigates to a contribution page/CiviCRM Admin page that requires SSL (frontend or backend), any further navigation within the site is navigated to using https. I find that the speed of SSL page loading is noticeably slower than standard http. So this ends up impacting the end user's experience (whether that be staff or constituents).

It would be great if the SSL features were limited to those pages requiring it, and returned people to standard http when returning to non-secure pages.

There was a recent discussion of this issue here http://civicrm.org/node/318
An improvement can be made using apache mod-rewrite, and there is a call out for a community contribution to make a built-in CiviCRM capability to do the SSL to non-SSL switching.

I think you linked to the wrong blog article.

The VirtueMart extension for Joomla has that function (force back to http when not required). It's handled through the session management part of the script. Maybe we can borrow their code logic.
