spam filters following unsubscribe link
October 10, 2013, 07:36:55 am
We are getting a lot of false unsubscriptions. I suspect it is because some spam filters follow links in emails, as suggested in this Mailchimp blog post: http://blog.mailchimp.com/is-your-own-domain-name-getting-you-blocked/.

Is there a solution to this? The forced inclusion of an unsubscribe link appears to make  CiviMail practically useless for recipients whose spam filters follow links. Am I missing something here?

You are overlooking that clicking the "optout" URL link opens a browser page at your CiviCRM that says:

Quote
Are you sure you want to optout: testing oh yeah (adsfsdaf@asdfsafsa.com)
[Opt Out]  [Cancel]

It is NOT a one click opt out directly from the email.  The optout button in the browser must also be pressed.  A spam filter isn't going to click that optout link in an email AND then also open it in a browser and then also click the button in a browser.

Remember that a link to unsubscribe is the law.

If you are still concerned, you can include the email link opt out, not a URL link opt out.  Spam filters won't send you an email.

Try CiviTeacher: the online video tutorial CiviCRM learning library.

Remember that a link to unsubscribe is the law.

the law...in one of the the 196 countries that is the home of a few % of the inhabitants of our planet ;)

Slightly related: I saw an interesting speaker about the NSA that was arguing that the US considers the net as their colonies.

This being said, being to opt out is indeed the law in quite a few countries, and the right thing to do anyway.
