Cookies, and why we should replace them
October 11, 2013, 05:39:23 am
Microsoft has announced and Google kind-of indicated that they are developing new technologies to target ads without cookies. Drivers for this move include 1) iOS Safari does not support cookies, 2) Do Not Track being used more, 3) the benefit to advertisers of tracking users not browsers as a user moves from one device to another which is possible using new techniques, 4) Internet usage over mobile devices (phones, iPads and similar devices that have a range of form factors) on track to surpass usage on computers.

Currently, CiviCRM requires users' browsers to accept cookies for several things to work, eg Search, if I am not mistaken.

I am wondering if there are reasonable alternatives we should be thinking about that will help our product support users transition to mobile usage better.

Most of these are around third party cookies, so we should be fine.

Yes, you need to use cookie to use civi, as pretty much every single app that needs authentication. We should be fine for a while.

and I'm sure EFF would be on our back if we weren't ;)

User authorization for CiviCRM is mostly handled by the CMS actually. All of them use cookies of course.
