Can't enter second membership

We have memberships that recur automatically using a credit card. In cases where memberships have expired, the former member needs to enter an new membership (with new recurring contribution) but a new membership is not created. The recurring contribution is created, but not linked to a any membership so the status is not updated. When there is no pre-existing expired membership, the membership entry form works fine. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that this is a recent problem and that people used to be able to enter a second membership using our membership form. Another factor, I am using Civicrm 3.4, but we are about to upgrade. Could this be a problem of the version that could be fixed in an upgrade?

Hi Liz,
it is possible that this is a problem that was noticed and is fixed in the new version. You can check the forum for posts about your problem, or you can check if there is already an issue raised for this on http://issues.civicrm.org
