WP and Civi on different servers and Integrations
October 18, 2013, 12:03:40 am
Hello....

I am helping OpenOakland get CiviCRM set up on their WP site.  I am an accidental techie, a former Civi user (eager to be one again) and a champion for Civi at OpenOakland and in the SF Bay Area.  I have someone to help me do our install and set up on their WP site which is hosted at Digital Ocean.  Two situations have come up which I am not skilled to address so I am reaching out for some help here.

1) I am being asked to provide pros and cons for us having our WP and Civi installation be on the same servers.  What are pros and cons?

2) A team member new to Civi is saying "My inclination is that we establish crm.openoakland.org to point to the civi install - there isn't a huge amount of need to full integration with the main site that I'm aware of - it very rarely is installed in that way." Is that true? is that a good idea?

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience, comments and opinions to share with me.

Thank you
Neil - Oakland CA

Your first question presumes that your main site has no connection with the CiviCRM site. If so, then it could be on a separate server. I don't see why not.

However the second question is better--should your main site have CiviCRM? I say yes, absolutely. For memberships and donations and event registrations, it's ideal to have these integrated into your site. This is actually the standard way to use CiviCRM.

Hello Hershel

Thanks for your reply and support

Would you be willing to identify 2 or 3 examples of what makes it ideal to have memberships and donations and event registrations integrated into the main site?

I guess I am asking for a few specific advantages for having WP and Civi integrated?

I don't quite understand the question. Why would you not want your donation and event pages etc. on your regular website? Why would you want to send your visitors to a separate site for such?

I think it should be clear that one integrated solution is almost always better than disparate ones.
