Alphabetical list of groups in searches is tied to hierarchy
October 21, 2013, 07:34:56 am
We have 550 Civi groups and most of these are hierarchied. So in Manage Groups I initially see just 8 groups as these parent all our other groups in an unfolding hierarchy.

When I go to Advanced Search or Find Contacts or a contact's Groups tab the list of groups is shown as a hierarchy in the dropdowns. When I click on a letter (eg N so I can find the North Bristol group) it does not take into account the 500 plus parented groups. The letter search only looks at the first hierarchy ie 8 groups in our case. Because the 500 plus groups aren't shown in alphabetical order in these search dropdowns I can't just scroll down them like I used to in previous versions. This means that finding any group is like finding a needle in a haystack! The same is true in the demo if you create parented groups.

Now... I know that with the new hierarchy view in Manage Groups it's no longer possible to see an alphabetical listing there. However, I'd love a solution so that in Advanced Search, Find Contacts etc I can find groups easily. Scrolling through 550 every time I want to find one is challenging. Two possible solutions are:

- either making the listings alphabetical in these dropdowns (in Adv Search, Find Contacts and the Groups tab)
- or enabling the selection of a series of letters to go to the relevant group, wherever it appears in a hierarchy

The first solution would be best. Is it possible? Interestingly, when you go into a Group's Settings and want to add a Parent, that list is fully alphabetical - just what we need elsewhere... so I'm hopeful! The list is also alphabetical when you choose the option 'Add Contacts to Group'.

seems like an option to display this as an ajax autocomplete widget / select box might be a decent alternative

can james work on and contribute a patch for this?

I'll look into it. With the list appearing fully alphabetically when you choose a Parent Group is there a quick fix from this of any sort? With the functionality there in that instance can that be replicated in Advanced Search/Find Contacts/Groups tab perhaps?
