User registration of event creates corrupted/merged contact data
October 21, 2013, 06:59:53 pm
Strange behaviour has been seen since upgrading to latest version of CiviCRM (Joomla).

When user "John Smith" registers for an event, the event registration takes place, but user information will be seemingly 'merged' with random 3rd parties (eg 'Jane Doe'), with the result that Jane Doe will now be called 'Jane Smith'.

Both John Smith and 'Jane Smith' will be recorded as registered for the event.

Does anybody have any ideas what might have gone wrong here?

Hi,

I have checked dedupe rules, and they look correct to me, but yes that was my immediate concern. I'm attaching a screenshot.

The merged users don't share an email address.

I will try to reproduce on demo server and get back to you.

Many thanks

I have tried to reproduce this issue on the working system using test events and test users, but without success.

Here is a detailed description from admin staff of one case of erroneous merging:

Quote
We had as a previous contact Ines 'SurnameA'.

When Ines 'SurnameB' registered to a workshop online on civiEvent registration page, her last name replaced SurnameA , ines@domaina.org replaced SurnameB’s email address, and added the organization name (required by the registration Profile) “Workforce Planning Board of XXXX”, in the address field as primary. Relationship with employer maintained. Also, the phone number belongs to SurnameA.

I checked the change log. Nobody else touched the record (Ines SurnameA) in the last year, only Ines SurnameB at the time of registration.

It certainly seems as if firstname alone is being used to dedupe users, however I cannot see anything in my dedupe rules that would allow that.

Could there be any connection between this any an error in foreign key links in the database? I've had database schema problems in the past, now resolved.
