Recurring contributions for memberships not linked to the membership
October 22, 2013, 07:10:48 am
If I create a membership and record payment in the back end the contribution related to that membership shows on the membership view. If I renew that membership then the second contribution also shows up on the same membership view. However if I set up a recurring membership and additional contributions are created by the ipn callbacks those new contributions are not shown on the membership view.

I am in the process of testing this again on the latest 4.3.7 in order to confirm that the new contributions are not in the civicrm_membership_payment table or if they are why they don't show up. It's going slow this morning because Paypal Sandbox is up and down. Meanwhile I wonder if anyone else can confirm this behavior? Do you think it is incorrect? To me it makes sense that if the initial contribution is related to a membership then the new contributions should also be linked.

I just wanted to bump this for further discussion. Any thoughts on how possible it is to link the recurring payments setup and receive via ipn to the membership that was created with the original contribution? Any reason why we might not want to do that in some cases?

I think you will get ongoing linked payments if they are created through the front end form (& in 4.4 you can fill in the front end form as someone else by adding cid=0 to the url)
