Fatal error Call to a member function freeze() when using profile with State

When attempting to add a membership, I receive the following error:
Fatal error: Call to a member function freeze() on a non-object in /sites/all/modules/civicrm/CRM/Contact/Form/Edit/Address.php on line 484

CiviCRM 4.4
Drupal 7.22
PHP 5.3.25

The issue did not occur on my 4.3.7 installation, only after updating to 4.4 today.
The contribution page contains a profile that includes the field for Contact/State/Primary.
The user  has a shared address.
The error does not occur for anonymous users (since is_shared and is_view should evaluate to False for anonymous users).
When I turn off the State field, freeze() is no longer called, so the error no longer occurs.

I have attempted to reproduce on the demo server, but was unable to get the error.

I just wanted to share that I have upgraded to 4.4.1 and tested again, and the error still occurs.

I received a screenshot of a user for whom this is happening. I can't replicate it on my end but I saw it happen on her computer.

I can confirm that it still happens to us on CiviCRM 4.4.3, PHP version 5.3.27.

We've had this error show up only on IE 9. The same user, as an anonymous user, from the same PC doesn't get the error while on Firefox and gets the error while on IE 9.
