No Petition Signature Activity Type

CiviCRM 4.1.3

From the book:

Go to Administer > Customize Data and Screens > Custom Fields and add a set of custom fields to capture responses to the petition questions. From the Used For drop down menu select Activities. For the Activity Type select Petition Signature.

There is no Petition Signature activity type

Are you looking at the current documentation ie for 4.4 or are you looking at the historical documentation for 4.1 http://book.civicrm.org/user/version/4.1 .

In the 4.1 book it is called Petition. The option doesn't exist just the same

I can see "Petition Signature" activity type at http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/options/activity_type?reset=1&group=activity_type ( this is 4.4 demo )

Perhaps so but we are using 4.1 and no current plans to upgrade. I searched Jira and found no issue related to this.

In 4.1, the Petition Signature option is not displayed.

Have you enabled CiviCampaign?  As stated on  http://book.civicrm.org/user/version/4.1/petition/setup this must be enabled to use Petition.

Is activity type Petition  present on Administer > Customize Data and Screens > Activity Types ?  It should be both reserved and enabled if those options are present.
