How create a contact record for the living dead
October 31, 2013, 09:53:09 am
I am trying to create a contact record, but in the "demographics" section I can only record someone as "deceased" or not. How can I expand the options to mark someone as a member of of the living dead?        Is there an admin option like there is for gender options? Or is there a hook I can implement?

I'm not sure I want to ask it, but why would you want to do that?

More importantly, how far away from me do you constituents "live"?

Currently there is no UI for this - I think there was a concern about creating "zombie" processes on the server.
Perhaps a contact sub-type plus custom field tab would do it for you. So in your custom fields you could collect information such as:
  • Date deceased
  • Date reanimated
  • Eats flesh (y/n)
Also in case your campaign "goes viral" you could use relationship types to track things like
  • Bit <-> Bitten By
  • Hunter of <-> Hunted by
I think you'll find CiviCRM to be a robust and flexible solution for all your undead relationship management needs.

I like the suggestion about using a contact sub-type and custom fields to track the living dead, undead, etc.   Question: deceased contacts currently are automatically excluded from mailing labels and mass emails. How would this work for the living dead, undead, etc?

I'd be interested in doing some work on this as I'm currently working on deploying civi for a few political campaigns. I feel we're behind the ball on this, as they're able to get the dead to actually turn out and vote  ;D

In my experience the open and click-through rate for mass emails to the undead is quite poor, although with direct mail you can expect to have a fairly solid bite-through rate. I think SMS is really the way to go - every undead person I know is pretty obsessed with their cell phone. Also check out the new chained SMS feature - works well even for the chained-up living dead.
