listener vs subscriber pattern for hooks

Might be nice from a performance as well as a bit from a code encapsulation perspective to switch from our current listener pattern for hooks to a subscriber pattern as we move toward incorporating Symfony more. See http://symfony.com/doc/master/components/event_dispatcher/introduction.html.
