Creating Relationships

So we're a church and one of the great things about CiviCRM is the ability to track relationships. Everyone is related to everyone else at least 7 different ways it seems, so it's very helpful to have a record of who is related to whom and how. The only problem is that creating all of those relationships is a slow and tedious process. Even recording all those relationships on a csv and importing them is tedious, and inevitably creates duplicate records all over the place.

So what's the quickest way to add/edit relationships?

My thoughts on two possible improvements:

1. When editing relationships from the contact record, open up a mini-window without going to a new page, like when editing data from the "Summary" tab. This would streamline things considerably.

2. When a relationship is added, check for connected relationships and automatically add them as well. So for example, if I create a Parent-Child relationship, then there would be a check, if the parent has a parent, then a Grandparent-Grandchild relationship would be created as well. Same thing for if the original child has children, then Grandparent-Grandchild relationships would be created for the original Parent. Same thing for siblings and creating Aunt/Uncle relationships, and siblings and parent-child relationships.

1) More in-line editing all over Civi would be great. Can your church kick in to sponsor some of that work?

2) I'd be wary of making Civi too smart for its own good. Creating data automatically is a bit different from extrapolating information from existing data. It's kind of like the difference between having Civi automatically add someone to a group whenever they meet certain criteria, vs having the "smart groups" feature - the latter is undeniably better as the former would be a disaster in lots of ways. Adding a "smart relationships" feature might be a nice idea - again, someone would have to fund the work.

3) Is any of your data entered by self-service forms such as contribution forms, event registration forms, or webforms? If so, you could use the Drupal Webform-Integration module or the CiviRelate module to create relationships automatically for you.
