Trying to Understand How Membership Inheritance Works
November 12, 2013, 05:49:49 pm
Hi Folks,

I'm not getting membership inheritance to work.

Goal: Have households who are related to synagogues inherit membership in the national synagogue organization when the synagogue as a whole joins the national organization.

I've done this all in the demo, so folks can easily look. (I hope the demo data doesn't get reset too soon.)

The name of the membership is called "Synagogue Community" and the organization is "Bet National Organization." The relationship type for inheriting the membership is: Household Member of synagogue. It costs $500. See the membership set up.

Here are specs on the relationship:

Rel. A to B         Rel B to A                                          A contact type  B contact type
Synagogue of   Household Member of synagogue    Organisation    Household

I created a synagogue, AlephBet Synagogue. The synagogue bought the $500 membership and the membership record is there.

There are three households with the relationship "household member of synagogue" set to the Aleph Bet Synagogue.
See how the relationships tab of the Aleph Bet Synagogue appropriately shows the three households.

But here is the rub: no related memberships show up when you view the membership for Aleph Bet Synagogue.

What am I doing wrong? Did I reverse a relationship? I thought I tried it both ways.

Oh, and I did run the cron "update membership status".

Thanks for the help.

Shai

Hi Shai

If this was Employee / Employer then you need to set up the membership for the Employer of relationship

It seems to me you have your membership using the wrong end of the relationship after a skim read of the above

How about set up another membership type with the other end of the relationship and see if that gives you the expected outcome

Hi Pete,

Thank you!!!

Yep; I was using the wrong side of the relationship on the membership type set-up. Good now.

It's not possible to chain this conferral of membership down to an individual who is related to the household, is it?
