Wrong E-Mail Validation

Hello fellows,

it seem's that the e-mail validation in profiles (for event registration) doesn't work correctly. I've noticed the following:

Code: [Select]
john.doe -> Validation failed (OK)
john.doe@ -> Validation failed (OK)
john.doe@example -> Validation success (not OK)
john.doe@example.com ->Validation success (OK)
So e-mails with missing top-level-domain are valid. This is not correct. Can you confirm this?

Also I'm wondering why there isn't an additional client side validation.

I confirmed this on demo,  IMO you can create the issue for same http://issues.civicrm.org/ and if possible submit patch.

Pretty sure we are using the native php function to validate
http://www.php.net/manual/en/filter.filters.validate.php

It's one of these case where it never happens, but in theory john.doe@example is a *valid* email.

Rejection of so-called partial domains because of "missing" dot is not following section 2.3.5 of RFC 5321.
It says FQDNs are permitted, and com, org, or va are (well, may be) valids FQDNs. It depends on DNS, not on syntax.
Some TDLs (although few of them) have MX RRs, the for example "abuse@va" is correct.

Hey xavier,

On Contact creation form CiviCRM validates Email field perfectly and for "john.doe@example" its giving error that its not valid email address.(I guess we are using jquery validation on contact creation form) so IMO it should be consistent in CiviCRM.

Sure, would make sense to use the same validation everywhere.

This being said, civi contact create seems to be wrong to reject john@example, it should/could be a valid email

Just for my curiosity what will be the solution if I ever faced this issue. ??? I am not much familiar about valid email address  ::)

civi uses php's email validator. Might want to check the rules php uses and why.

might also want to check with a more recent version of php (since they seem to update and improve the validation quite frequently). So locally i'm running php 5.5.5 and john.doe@example works nicely in contact create and profile create

My advice: stay as far away as you can. the RFC 822 governing what is valid addresses are way way complicated (as in, very smart guys went very drunk ;). If you can point out to another library, or better yet, php native function, and say that whatever they deem valid should be, you'll be fine.
