Views3 integration with separate databases on different physical hosts
November 13, 2013, 06:59:32 am
I know views integration works when the Drupal database user has select access to the Civicrm database:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC32/Views2+Integration+Module
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC40/Views3+Integration

Unfortunately this is not always possible,
1. or the hosting company does not allow the same user for different databases
2. or the databases are on different physical hosts.
Using a single database for Drupal and Civicrm would work in the first case but looks like a last solution to me.

So I'm wondering if there are with the current version of Civicrm any workarounds to have Views 3 working in those cases.

With older installations (Drupal 6 + Civicrm 3) I got Views 2 integration working using the trick explained in http://andrewbrookins.com/tech/civicrm-views-2-integration-remote-civicrm-database/ in which 'database' => 'civicrm' is added to the relevant arrays in civicrm.views.inc. Unfortunately after testing this setup does not work anymore for Views 3 or Civicrm 4 (not sure which one is causing it to fail).

So if anyone has any suggestions how Views 3 could work with separate database users or databases on different physical hosts, please let me know.

Sounds like you have a somewhat unusual configuration.
Sharing a DB with drupal is certainly the simplest solution. I don't think there would be any big drawbacks to doing it that way.
Try asking your question on the new CiviCRM help site.
