google checkout end of life next week! Where to? iATS? PayPal Express?
November 14, 2013, 02:15:32 pm
hi everybody,

I have a question about civicontribute and payment processors. What do you recommend for a small nonprofit on a small budget, that does not intend to raise more than about $20k annually?

I'm on 3.4 right now (upgrade coming soon I promise.. :) and need a quick fix because google checkout is being taken offline NEXT WEEK on 20 november.

I have experimented with PayPal Express and it is working, but it is confusing because it seems to require a paypal account. When you fill in credit card details on our site and click through the info seems to get lost and the user has to type in all details again, including logging into paypal or creating an account.

Now I am looking at iATS and will be getting a quote from them on how much it would cost - that seems an attractive option since they accept payment in euros and other currencies. Not sure about how easy it is to configure but will try it if the cost is not too high.

Cheers,

Tobias

Since payment processors are often country specific you probably need to provide more information to get a reply. It appears you are looking for an offsite/hosted payment processor?

Thanks, Eileen!

I am based in the United States, my budget is very modest, and I am looking for a payment processing system that uses CiviCRM 3.4 and allows people to make payments online. Usually this means a credit card. I don't really care if it's onsite or offsite, as long as the process is seamless and user-friendly and the contributions are recorded in CiviCRM.

Do you need anything else?

Cheers,

Tobias

PayPal pro is probably the all-around best choice for you. It's affordable, easy to set up, and doesn't scare people away like paypal express does (allows people to put their cc directly in rather than seeming to require a paypal account).
Also, when you upgrade to a later version...
It works with drupal webforms :)

Thanks, Cole!

Still picking through the differences between these three PayPal options. Any guidance is appreciated. What's the diff between Paypal Website Payments Standard and PAypal Website Payments Pro?

I also have heard back from iATS and the fees seem reasonable there too though have monthly fees and an annual fee, then low per-transaction fees. Also provides support for transactions in other currencies which might help us.

Cheers,

Tobias

u might want to check stripe. i think the primary reason is this avoid the whole PCI compliance issue down the road that u'll have with paypal pro and/or authorize and/or collecting any info on the website.

stripe gets around it by using javascript and tokens etc. However while i was typing this, i realized that u need a recent version of 4.x for that to work

The diff btw PP std/express and pro is that std/exp force the user to go off-site to pay, and present a confusing sales-pitch for signing up for a PP account. PP Pro doesn't do that - users can enter their card directly on your site without being tricked into thinking they need a PP account.
Check out the fee structure on PP's site and compare it with the other processor you are looking at. It's good to shop around.

Thanks guys! I don't even know what stripe is, I'm so out of fashion. :)

PayPal Pro is $30/monthly which is a big chunk. There is a Paypal Advanced which costs $5/monthly. I don't know what the processing fees are. https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/compare-business-products

My current thinking at the moment is to try to get iATS working or to avoid civicontribute altogether and just send folks to networkforgood.org for donation processing. It's 5% per donation (which donor can opt to pay) and completely hands off. Then when we do upgrade CiviCRM which is in the works we can look at all the options and the latest and greatest integrations.

Cheers,

Tobias

Hmm, PP advanced looks like a good option. Not sure if it works with Civi but might be worth trying out (use the PP Pro processor and see if Advanced is similar enough to work?)
The downside of networkforgood is they don't integrate with Civi at all (but they really SHOULD!) so you end up doing lots of manual data entry.
Stripe also sounds like it would be good.
Tobias - you realize that you are using a version of Civi that has numerous known security vulnerabilities? Upgrade man!

Thanks for the tips, and yes thanks for the encouragement to upgrade. It's long overdue and we are working on it now.
