Using v4.4.1 with Joomla 2.5.11

I am looking at Civicrm to manage offline membership. I have installed it and
a) created Joomla User Group for offline membership administrators and given access to required parts of Civicrm via the backend - worked more simply than i expected 
b) set up all the standard civicrm membership config and created some members 
c) created a Joomla User Group specifically for the members of the offline organisation (these members may or may not be already registered on the website)

Now i want to be able to assign new,current and grace members within civicrm to this new Jooma User Group. I have looked at the Joomla Civicrm Membership Authentication and ACL Plugin and this looks like it may do this but it also has some configuration that manages access to the site. I dont quite understand how this works having read the wiki page. Can someone explain if this would cause problems for the set up described above and if not how i should configure the login behaviour within the plugin or is there a completely different way of doing this?
