Can members communicate with one another?

I couldn't find this part.  But when a member (not organizers) log in, can they search member databases?   Our organization is an association of like members that can contact one another for either networking or education purposes.

Currently I use community builder for this along with Joomla 1.5, but was wondering if CiviCRM can also do this.

You can create CiviCRM Profiles (subsets of contact fields - potentially including email, phone #'s etc.) - and expose those to authenticated Joomla "front-end" users. I'm not sure whether this is analogous to the "communicate with one another" CB features or not.

I didn't want to expose the membership data to the public.  I wanted it only for those members who sign up. We have a paid membership and part of that is networking with others in your field.

You can expose the link to only people who have logged in. this is a feature of joomla's menu structure

Somewhat related to your topic, it would be nice for administrative people in CiviCRM to be able to use the "Send Email to Contacts" to email selected small groups.  However, the send email to contacts is text only and does not really work very well for this purpose, forcing us to each maintain our own local email groups.

I have put in a request to:
http://civicrm.uservoice.com/
for  Allow send email to contacts to launch local email client
which was a great feature on our old contact management system
