Exporting Tags/Groups
November 22, 2013, 11:46:07 am
New user here.

I'm currently testing CiviCRM to see if it will work for a small Library Volunteer Organizations(we call our donors/volunteers 'friends').

Right now I'm stuck on a few things:

1)We have many husband/wife 'friends.' With our Access DB, we simply have 1 record with 'Name1' 'Name2' 'other data'. I'm playing with breaking it out with CiviCRM because we could target each person with volunteer opps. The problem I'm running into is with the export. If I tag husband as a book sale volunteer and the wife as a bake sale volunteer, I'm only getting 1 person's tags, not both of them when I merge the two together. I tried using groups and the export doesn't even export the group information for the individual even without the merging.

2) Households vs. Individuals? This seems to be an ongoing debate around civicrm with many opinions. Again our org doesn't treat them differently now. In the future though it would be nice when we make calls to know whether we're supposed to ask for the husband or the wife instead of guessing.

3) Lastly I'm stuck on volunteers. I just installed the CiviVolunteer, but it seems buggy(When I press Assign Volunteers or Volunteer Needs nothing happns) I was toying around with using tags or labels, but I would like the ability to use that information in our communication(Ie, You have volunteered for xyz, would you like to continue)

Thanks for the help.

1) You can export "related contact" information. So you could do an export that listed the husband/wife in separate columns and their tags in separate columns as well.

2) Up to you. If you have found an easy way to create households during the import process, you might as well do it. But if (as I suspect) it would be a pain, then it's probably easier to skip it for now.

3) Don't give up on CiviVolunteer - it's being very actively developed right now and all bug reports are fixed promptly (last one we got we fixed the same day). Please post details of your problem on the CiviVolunteer board.

Lobo just reminded me that others have had the same problem with CiviVolunteer and in all cases it was because they hadn't configured (or had misconfigured) their extension url. See: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,30531.0.html
