Upgrade 4.2.7 to 4.4.2 -> no CiviCRM menus

I'm running on WP 3.6.1 and was running 4.2.7 and have just worked through the upgrade procedure documentation without apparent hitches. Unfortunately the CiviCRM menus will not present themselves.  I also see that the CiviCRM logo is missing from the Civ menu item in the WP menu. Prehaps a smoking gun?

Help appreciated. This is a test machine, but I would like to see this working so I can move our live system ahead.  Thanks.

I confess I overlooked te 'delete the old civicrm' directions the first time through.

The second time through I landed up after confirming ready to upgrade, on an empty page with "[]   [Retry][Skip]"   (empty brackets and the Retry and Skip buttons.  No joy with either of those.

I have also tried rebuild menus.

might want to ensure u have a nice clean working 4.2.7 before u try the upgrade again

Thanks for that Donald.   I am working with a fresh VM in each attempt. Not trying to overcome any self-inflicted corruption of the process.
