CiviVolunteer 1.1 in use - 3 improvement request
November 25, 2013, 02:10:17 pm
For the last few days we have been running the CiviVolunteer 1.1 extension (on CiviCRM 4.4.1 under Wordpress)
We are giving it quite a ride since we are using it to manage our volunteer for our biggest event of the year; the holidays food distribution.
This event involve many (100+) volunteers over a period of 2 week.
The extension is turning out to be a real help for us even with the fiew problems listed below.
Many thanks to the dev team. For a early version it is really impressive. :)

We have, so far, 1 "bug" and 2 feature improvement request

The "bug" is not a major one but it is "bugging" our volunteer's manager:
Once a person as been assign to a task we can move him/her to another task but there is no way to totally delete the entrie (when a mistake was made and the wrong person was assigned to the event). It would be nice to be able to delete a vonlunteer entrie in the "assign volunteers" panel

The improvement request in the "assign volunteer pannel":
1- Since it is very common to have the same person doing work in many scheduled period for a single event it would be a real time saver if it was possible to duplicate a already present volunteer instead of having to find him from a search.

2- This one is a major problem for us:
If an even has a lot of scheduled period for vonlunteer work it is very difficult to use the drag and drop to place a available volunteer in a time period that show below the bottom part of teh window. It is still possible to do it by selecting the volunter and then using the mouse scroller weel while keep a finger on the left button. Not a very easy thing to do if you have many people to register in the system.

For the bug - you might have missed this but if you drag a volunteer off an assignment and back to the "Available" panel then there will be a delete button.

For the feature requests:
1) Agree that would be nice, and probably not too hard to add
2) Perhaps making the volunteer tasks "collapsible" would help (so you can hide the list of volunteers and just see the assignment names). Also probably not too hard.

Does your organization have any funds available for these improvements?

Thanks for the info on how to delete a vonlunteer from the assign windows.

I agree that making the task list colapsable would help a lot. But I'm not convince that it would totally solve the issue when dealing with a major event where many (like 100+) tasks have to be assign.
I think that a more efficient (from a user point of view) way would be to get rid of the "drag & drop" approch and look at a drop-down piklist, build from the available vonlunteer table, associate with each task.

As for funding; I would gladly present a request to my org administrators and i'm confident that we can find some money for this kind of change since it would make a big difference in the usability of the extension for any org that manage volunteer work for large event. Could you give me a approximate figure on the possible cost of this work ?

And thanks again for the great work that has been done so far. CiviVolunteer is going to be very usefull for us !

I think it doesn't have to be either/or. We can add the drop-down list that will allow you to move or copy a volunteer, while keeping the drag-drop interface.
I'll send you a quote.
