What's a good way to bulk remove a membership type
November 26, 2013, 03:36:35 am
What's a good way to remove to bulk remove a membership type that have other membership types that we want to persist. I can't just delete the members and the profile field for membership only allows me to allocate an alternative membership. Do I have to do it direct on the database?

Cheers and TIA

Sean

Ok, I'm using Bulk Operations to cancel the memberships, but I'd rather wipe out all record of their ever existing without deleting them on each individual record (of thousands)

are you wanting to delete the Membership Type so all Membership records pertaining to that type are wiped? and are you saying that doesn't happen currently?

No I don't want to remove the membership type I just want to remove the record of having had that membership type at one point from about 200 records, others will retain that membership type. What I've done is cancel the membership for targets, but it still shows the cancelled membership on their record, a constant reminder of a previous huge error on my part ;(

Are there any contributions associated with these memberships?

No, there aren't.

Apologies for the delay in replying, it's not an urgent problem, and I have someone manually removing them now, but would be a useful technique to know if this ever arises again

I should have been more precise in my question about contributions.  The critical question is "Was this membership created at the time a contribution was processed?"  If the answer is "yes" then deleting the memberships will probably result in deleting the contribution as well.  (I speak from experience. We had a contribution form that include one compulsory paid membership and another optional no-cost membership - deleting the no-cost membership deleted the contribution also.)

As there are no contributions associated with these membership  you can do a bulk delete of the memberships using the action Delete members available to you after doing a Find Members search  (or an advanced search set to display results as memberships).

I know it says Delete Members, but it won't, it will only delete the memberships  (see http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-13764).  I have just used it myself to delete 1672 memberships and I can assure you that the contacts are still there.

There was a discussion (which I lost) about calling Find Members etc Memberships to help avoid this confusion and to underline the concept that Contacts have Membership records. Ah well. Can't win them all
