Why does this extra letter A appear beside the currency symbol and how can I get rid of it

Are you experiencing this problem on a fresh install of CiviCRM 4.4 ?

There seems to be a problem with special characters (like some currency symbols, e.g. £, ¥ or €), on fresh installs (happens not always, but sometimes). There had been some threads on this topic around during the last weeks.

However, I am not sure about the easiest and safest way to fix...

No, not a fresh install, it's an upgrade, we've not previously used CiviContribute on this site before though ( I think, because of this very issue) .
