Use of word "test" in the subect and from address of test mailings
December 02, 2013, 02:29:58 pm
We've received reports of test mailings going into the spam folder.

We suspect that the word "test" in the subject line may contribute to this behavior (which is backed up by the Chimp Maiiling faq: http://mailchimp.com/resources/guides/how-to-avoid-spam-filters/html/

I opened a ticket to address it here: http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-13891

But then realized that this would benefit from some community discussion before implementing anything.

Suggestions? I prefer replacing "test Mailing" with "Draft Mailing"

My off-the-cuff answer would be to add "(draft)" or perhaps "(CiviMail draft)" at the end of the subject line. Modifying the beginning of the subject line has always felt too intrusive.

What's the benefit of changing anything in the test mailing?

Presumably, the recipients of the tests are expecting to receive the test, they are able to know it's not the "real" sending, right?

What does mail chimp do?

Xav, manager's to proof read / sign off will not always be expecting a test.

I actually like it at the beginning because it makes them stand out.  (Draft) would be enough IMO.

I think modifying the subject line is a good idea. I know from our experience at PTP - I get draft emails and I'm not directly involved in the final edit or the schedule for when they are going to be sent. So, having a modified subject line is a simple and easy way to know whether or not it's too late to suggest corrections.

I like the suggestion of using "CiviMail Draft" - it makes it crystal clear where the draft came from. And, although I'm sympathetic to not being overly intrusive, I think the point is to be intrusive on this one, so I also prefer the beginning of the subject line, rather than the end (which sometimes gets cut off in my email client listing).

On closer examination of the code, I noticed that it also changes the From name to "CiviCRM Test Mailer (ORIGINAL FROM NAME)".

I think I'd prefer to drop that change altogether so we see the actual From Name as it will appear in the mailing.

i agree with the change to fix the from name. Not sure why we made it the Test Mailer etc

I lean towards putting things as a prefix (i.e. CiviMail Draft - REAL SUBJECT HERE)

Thanks everyone for the feedback. The change should go into 4.4.3.

Seeems like there's a convention in many systems of using square brackets for a descriptor / prefix, like this:

[CiviMail Draft] Real Subject Here

I think that makes it a bit clearer that the descriptor is not part of the real subject line. Thoughts on that?
