Looking for the best order for upgrading and moving server
December 06, 2013, 11:00:49 am
I am on CiviCRM version: 3.3.6, Drupal 6.2, MySQL version: 5.0.91, PHP version: 5.2.17.  In the short term I need to upgrade to Drupal 6.29.  Any thing I need to look out for with CiviCRM while doing this Drupal 6.2 to 6.29 upgrade?

I have Shared Hosting and have been limping along with CiviCRM for 2 years, but it's worked for me.  I plan on moving to VPS, Virtual Private Server by March 2014 (still investigating options).  I have limited experience and learn as I go.  I am grateful for these forums!

What's the best long term plan for upgrading?
Should I upgrade CiviCRM (and Drupal) to highest version(s) possible with my current configuration before moving to the new server?
I use Wordpress so when I move should I consider installing CivCRM in Wordpress and not Drupal?

No, should be fine.

If the new server is faster, then use that for upgrading. :) Aside from that, it probably makes no difference.

Yes,  you should consider it. I can't say what's better, but certainly it's worth investigating.

Crayon, I don't know your exact situation, but I can tell you not all shared hosting is alike.  I had an awful time with civiCRM using ThinkHost.  Eventually I had enough, looked at options and found civihosting.com, which is Hershel's operation.  It's shared hosting, but optimized for civiCRM.  It's $15 a month, not $5 a month, but let me tell you, for a mission critical function like the website, it's worth it and isn't a lot in the bigger picture.  Since moving there have been no troubles until now.  Night and Day difference.  The few times I've needed support, they have been fast.  I thought about a Virtual Server, but I don't think we really need it and certainly I don't have the expertise to maintain it properly.
Christopher
Thanks to those who help create and enhance civiCRM!

Chris, thank you for your kind words. Just to make things very clear, your referral to the need to maintain a VPS only applies to non-managed VPS's. The VPS solution from CiviHosting is, however, a fully managed VPS and requires no server administration knowledge whatsoever.
