Update membership with external ID
December 08, 2013, 04:59:56 am
When updating memberships via the import wizard, it is not possible to use the external ID. What is the reason that this is not possible?

Evidently, the import should contain a unique key. But most of the time, the external ID is.

to keep things simple and focussed on membership stuff only, i suspect

U'll need to use the contact import to update external id

Thanks, lobo.

In my case, I would like to import contacts and memberships from a single Excel file. I could do that in two steps, first importing the contacts and then the 'membership stuff'. This is only possible now when inserting; for updating, I first have to export the imported contacts for the internal ID.

This is a far more complex thing and not easy to maintain when importing this for 75 organizations each month. If the external ID could be used to map the memberships, this would simplify things - at least from an end-user view.

might want to adopt an approach like the one suggested in this blog post:

https://civicrm.org/blogs/capo/new-tool-civicrm-data-integration

Your other option would be to contribute patches to improve civicrm's import. But this might be a more involved, more expensive project
