General Integration (basic) Question
December 09, 2013, 09:26:32 am
New with CiviCRM (and basic with WP)

As far as I understand, the only existing way to use CiviCRM through WP is to integrate "Front end page types" (e.g. Profile, User Dashboard) in a WP Page.

Question : How can I link that page to a selected Contact (how do I select it, and then transmit it to WP/CiviCRM to be displayed in the Page)

Other question : CiviCRM provides a lot of other functions : how can I manage them in WP ? : e.g. I can customize the Navigation Menu in CiviCRM (administer), but where and how can I use it ?

Unfortunately, the demo is not of any help on those subjects (it shows only the admin side)

I feel a bit ridiculous with those basic questions, but I would welcome some help
Where can I find some pertaining documentation ?

I'm not sure what you are trying to do but I'll address how you use CiviCRM with WordPress.

CiviCRM is installed on a WordPress site and you access it through the Wordpress administrative login.  To use CiviCRM, you don't need to link it to any of your website's public webpage.  You just use the WordPress administrative interface to access and use CiviCRM.  From there you can located, view and modify a selected contacts data.  You can also access all of CiviCRM's function through WP administrative interface.  You don't have to add any WordPress pages to do this.

You can link CiviCRM to your website's public page in order to allow the public to interact with CiviCRM.  If you look at our WordPress site (http://phoenixacademyomaha.org/) you'll see two examples of that.  The donate button at the top of the homepage links to a CiviCRM generated online donation page.   This allows the public to donate and automatically records donations in CiviCRM.  At the bottom of the homepage is a email newsletter signup form.  When a person signs up they are entered into our mailing list in CiviCRM.

Thank you for your answer,

My concern is as follows :

My parish manages several (dozens of) Organizations, which may have quite different structures (e.g. some are just services, while others manage fundings)
I want :
 - parishioners to register themselves and manage their own personal info (to be shared between pertaining Organizations)
 - organizations to have their own Administrators each managing his own Organization only (and its pertaining functions : membership, mailings, grantings, events, ...)

I don't want anybody (except me as a super-admin) to work in admin mode (too dangerous !)

This is why I would like to embed all the functions inside WP Pages, each actor being limited to his own permissions (based upon his login if possible).

I am beginning to understand a bit more than 10 days ago, but am still digging forward.

Thanks again
