Contributions being charged twice

Almost 50% or more of our online contributions are being charged twice or sometimes 3 times. The error they are getting is the attached message.

"We can't load the requested web page. This page requires cookies to be enabled in  your browser settings. Please check this setting and enable cookies (if they are not enabled) Then try again. "

Site Administrators: This error may indicate that users are accessing this page using a domain or URL other then the configured Base URL. Example Base URL is http://example.org, but some users are accessing the page via http://www.example.org or a domain alias like http://myotherexample.org.

The problem is they get this message and it actually charges the credit card. Then they try again and it charges their credit card again. So they are confused if their contribution went through or not. Then they find out that it went through twice.

I added the https://www to the link and that made it worse. So now it is working on my computer, but not some of the older browsers. How do I figure out what the base URL is set to?

I just changed your CIVICRM_UF_BASEURL to use https. I was also thinking that may be the issue. Let's see if that will help.

Unfortunately this is still happening:( Out of 40 contributions in the last two weeks we still had 6 that had errors and did duplicate contributions. Is there anything else that might be causing this?

One thing I just remembered, we created a Donation page that has two buttons one for monthly giving and another for a one time gift. This is what the URL looks like in the button that goes to the contribution page that we are having issues with civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=3. This is the URL of the donation page with the buttons https://lifelight.org/Donate#. They both have https, so should there be an issue going from that page to the contribution page?

No, the link from that page to the CiviCRM page is fine. Perhaps you could upgrade CiviCRM to the latest version? That might help.

I've spent quite  a lot of time tracking down issues like this & there have been a few fixes so definitely get onto the latest. You should also check your civicrm log (in the templates_c directory on your server) for any messages
