Promotion/branding in CiviMail/public-facing pages?

So back when I was a Convio admin, all Convio pages had an irremovable "powered by Convio" badge in a footer to the page.  Likewise any e-mail I get from Constant Contact has a badge on the bottom of the e-mail.

While I'm sure many users use CiviCRM in part because it does NOT have involuntary corporate branding all over it - what about the idea of putting in something similar to CiviCRM with an option to easily turn it off?  In particular, a "Powered by CiviCRM" at the bottom of contribution/event pages feels relatively innocuous.  You could default this to enabled on new installations, but default it to off on existing installations/upgrades.
